Scottish Thistles - Tilburg 4-6 May 2018

Tilburgh International Veterans Tournament 2018

We now have a full squad of 16 players and have accepted the invitation.

As this is a Scottish Thistles event, there is no selection and a fair allocation of pitch time is guaranteed. There are two age sections on offer (60–67 & 67+) and we will compete in the 60-67 group, which currently comprises 10 teams. Those who took part in 2016 and 2017 thoroughly enjoyed the touranment. The venue can be seen by following this link: or at the HC Tilburg website (in Dutch). There is now a dedicated tournament website.

The team hotel is the Auberge Du Bonheur, Bredaseweg 441, 5036 NA Tilburg. It is a short walk along Bredaseweg from Tilburg Hockeyclub, and a one mile walk from Tilburg Universiteit station.

The tournament fee is €300 per team (€20 per person if we have the maximum allowed squad of 15). Lunch crates are available on the Saturday and Sunday at €75 per team (15 people). An oriental buffet is on offer at €15 pp on the Friday evening and on Saturday evening there is a dinner/dance (€30 pp) - this is optional but you are encouraged to attend.

A short walk to and from the ground will do you good and cost you nothing You will need to pay your share of gifts for the opposition teams – these in the past have been around £10 per person.

You will need to organise your own travel to Tilburg. The main possibilities other than car/ferry are: flying to Schipol then Intercity/Sprinter to Tilburg Universiteit (takes about 1hr 30mins with a change at s'Hertogenbosch) or taking the Eurostar to Brussels then train to Tilburg (approx. 2 1/2 hrs with changes at Rosendaal and Breda). Dutch trains run like clockwork and changes of train are often just across the platform to a waiting train. Ryanair flies to Dusseldorf and Brussels which might be cheaper alternatives but timings are not good and may involve more transport changes. Given the location of the hotel, it doesn't make much sense to fly and hire a car unless you plan to stay a bit longer and tour around.

The tournament starts with the welcome at 11.30am, the first matches at 1.00pm on Friday 4 May, and the final starts at 14:00 on Sunday 6 May. You will need to plan to arrive by around midday on the Friday and depending on your choice of transport you may be able to travel back on the Sunday evening.
