Gordon Loudon had to call off because of umpiring duties at the Reserve Cup Semi Final.
A mixed bag of four over 70s players, three over 65 players and seven over 60 players travelled down the motorway for a Thistles practice game against a Cumbria select. Though the match was scheduled to be against an over 60 team, the main over 60 Cumbria squad was taking part in another tournament and Neil Mackenzie was forced to arrange opposition composed of 45 to 60 year olds.
Although many of the Scottish lads had not played together before, the team started off pretty confidently and were passing the ball well and supported one another throughout the first quarter. Unfortunately a couple of the Thistles players had not been playing regularly and a couple of balls were presented to the opposition against the run of play, resulting in two goals. In spite of this setback we finished the quarter in control but just could not score.
The second quarter was a tidier affair, however the 'older' defence were constantly being stretched by three younger and faster forwards. 2:0 down at half time seemed reasonable but we could not penetrate with enough numbers to really worry the opposition.
The third and fourth quarters saw Thistles play much more as a unit, but we were always vulnerable to a 'quick-break' when the ball was lost in the opposition twenty five. Unfortunately the younger age of the opposition saw speed win out against skill in the end. One goal against in the third quarter and then two more in the final quarter saw us defeated by five to nil.
Overall though this was a good game and we never felt we were completely 'out of it'. Some food and drink from our hosts afterwards made this event completely enjoyable.
