Thistles Flower in the Sun

In a friendly played at Meggetland in Edinburgh on Sunday 4 June 2017, a strong Cumbria side were fast out of the traps, scoring twice early in the first quarter. They seemed intent on giving Dick Pearce in the Scottish Thistles goal good value for his match fee. But then came a peach of a goal from Stuart Robertson, collecting at the top of the circle, and clattering the back boards. This was soon followed by a powerful reverse stick shot from Roy Crichton, set up by Paul Bateson which levelled the scores. Paul then scored himself with a reverse strike following an impressive short corner routine, not least as it was different from the one planned. 3-2 at half time was probably about fair.

At the start of the second half, Paul again escaped the defence only to have his powerful shot stopped on the line by a foot. He dispatched the flick with consummate ease, and seemed quite prepared to risk the cost of a jug with several penetrating runs.

Thereafter, there was a long period of Cumbria pressure, including a lot of short corners, but the Thistles defence steadfastly, if not always elegantly, resisted. Eventually, Cumbria did get a goal back, but try as they might, couldn't find an equaliser. The match finished 4-3 with everyone agreeing it had been a good game.
