Celtic Cup 2012

Inverclyde National Sports Centre, Largs 27-28 October 2012

Scotland Over 65s set the tone with a narrow 2-1 victory over their Welsh counterparts but it was a close run thing with the winning goal being scored by Edinburgh Cala’s Sandy Weir with the last hit of the game. Earlier Roy Crichton (Waverley Inveresk) had given the Scots an early lead from a set piece strike. The home side fell out of the game in the second half (including a penalty stroke miss by Giffnock’s Alan Auld) and it was no real surprise when Wales equalised through David Maas. The home team rallied and got the eventual winner at the death. Over the piece Scotland deserved its win.

Scotland Over 60s had a most convincing 2-0 victory over Wales in the second match of the day. Following first half strikes by Hew Bishop (Dunfermline Carnegie) and Glenn Paton (Livingston & West Lothian) they remained in control for the rest of the game and thoroughly deserved their success.

Hew Bishop and David Ballingall (Jersey) won the respective player of the tournament awards and were each presented with hockey sticks kindly donated by Matador.

The reverse fixtures on Sunday afforded our Welsh guests the opportunity to gain some revenge which they did by winning both matches 1-0. With these fixtures coming in the category of “unofficial matches”, Saturday’s victories ensured that the Celtic Cups remained north of the border for another year
