Frank Nawn takes on England LX at Lille

Frank Nawn taking on a packed English defence in Lille

Scottish Thistles sent a squad of 13 players to the 14th EuroLUC Supérvéterans tournament in Lille on 12-13 March 2011, finishing in third place. All the goals were claimed by Donalds: Donald Paterson scored two and Donald Dunbar finished on top with three thanks to a brace against France.

Scottish Thistles ended the first day of competition in joint second place behind England LX thanks to wins against Alliance (2-0) and Eburons Tungri (1-0), and a 0-0 draw against Zestigplussers. The only reverse was against a very strong Welsh Dragons side who converted a great deal of pressure into a single goal. Donald Paterson, with a goal in each victory, and Donald Dunbar were the Scottish scorers. Sunday saw Thistles take on England LX first thing, with a game against France later in the morning.

In the first five minutes against England, Thistles played their best hockey of the weekend, controlling the game in midfield and preventing England from touching the ball for long periods. England regrouped but Dunbar worked very hard to close down the English defenders, who struggled to impose their usual build up from the back. The game slowly swung towards the English but Thistles stood fast at the back to gain a creditable 0-0 draw. The final game against France was all over in five minutes after Dunbar struck twice in quick succession, Morrice and Paterson setting him up for his goals. The Scots sat back and nearly slipped up when keeper Leighton left a French shot which he thought was from outside the circle, a theory not shared by the umpire. However Thistles held out for their third win to claim third place behind Welsh Dragons and England LX.
