Scottish Thistles v Waverley Inveresk Select
Bangholm Saturday 20 June 2009

Result: Waverley Inveresk Select 4, Scottish Thistles 3

Waverley Inveresk were short of a few players and recruited a few of the Thistles players to help make a game of it. In the end, they succeeded in that, edging the fixture narrowly by the odd goal in seven.

Thistles treated the game as a training session, concentrating on holding on to the ball and on positional awareness. It was played in three periods of 25 minutes each and for the first two periods there was nothing in it, the speed of the younger midfield and forward opposition players counterbalancing good play in midfield by Thistles. The final period saw Thistles begin to tire and a stalemate developed, with the five man midfield unable to provide good service for the forwards, and the three man defence stretched at times by the faster Waverley Inveresk front line.

Squad:

Black (GK), Auld (Captain), Andrew, Cathro, Downie, Dunlop, Ferrol, Forster, Margerison, McIntosh, McLernan, Morrice, Tucker, Weir

Fraser (GK), Lloyd, Philip and Strachan played for Waverley Inveresk, along with Roy Crichton who organised the fixture. Others took it in turns to play for the opposition.

Goalscorers: Tucker, Dunlop (2)

After the game we adjourned to the Starbank Inn for sandwiches and a chance to sample their real ales. Match fees of £10 were collected on the day to cover our share of the pitch hire, the sandwiches and 10p each to cover a pint for Roy as our gracious host with maybe enough left over for a packet of crisps.
